Rockhopper penguins feed primarily on a variety of squid and krill. Rockhopper penguins are one of the crested penguins and are characterized by red eyes and bright yellow feather tufts over each eye brow. Rockhoppers have been described as fearless and bad-tempered by scientists.They use their sharp beaks to protect themselves and encourage intruders to leave nesting sites. The population is considered vulnerable by the World Conservation Union with an estimated 1,882,000 pairs of rockhopper penguins remaining in the world, having been hunted for their oil at one time.
